Is It Safer Than Tap Water?
Today, many Rechreational Vehicle owners mistrust RV Tap Water Quality and have switched to
Bottled Water believing it is Safer Than Tap water.
Consumers indulge in Bottled Water, yet most know very little about the contents of the water in the bottle.
They trust that it must be better than Tap Water. The fact is that most Bottled Water is reprocessed Tap Water you
are paying a premium for.
Actually most are paying for it twice. Once in their Water Rates or Taxes and again when they buy the
Reprocessed Tap Water.
The Bottled Water Association has created a
market for Bottled Water through extensive advertising and packaging. They have convinced many that bottled
water is safer than tap water.
Few Bottled Water Regulations are
in place that can ensure the safety of bottled water. Bottled Water is regulated by the FDA. They have just
adopted New Bottlling Standards that allow levels of
certain disinfectants and disinfection by products in the Standard Of Quality For Bottled Water.
Is Your Bottled Water City Water?
The February 2008 Reader's Digest article states that over 25% of the Bottled Water in America is just
filtered city water that is reprocessed and marketed as bottled water.
Once Upon A Time
In the past, most Americans got Safe Drinking Water only from the tap. Now,
they're buying much of their water in plastic bottles from supermarkets, convenience stores and Water Vending Machines from coast to
coast.
RVer's drink bottled water at work, after a workout, at events or just about any place and anytime. They
are consuming bottled water in record numbers because they have been lead to believe bottled water is safer
than tap water.
Bottled Water Deception
In recent years, sales of bottled water in this country have exploded. This increase in sales is the result of a
public perception of purity created by advertisements and packaging labels featuring pristine glaciers and crystal
clear mountain springs.
However, bottled water sold in America is not necessarily cleaner or safer than most tap water. A recent
four-year scientific study National Research Defense Council
(NRDC) included testing of more than 1,000 bottles of 103 brands of bottled water.
Most of the bottled water tested was found to be of high quality, but some brands were contaminated. About
one-third of the waters tested contained levels of contamination.
The contaminants included synthetic organic chemicals, bacteria, and arsenic that exceeded allowable limits
under either state or bottled water industry standards or guidelines.
Bottled Water Consumption
Bottled water is an increasingly popular beverage in the U.S. Total U.S. bottled water sales have grown from
roughly 6% to more than 13% per year over the last five years, according to data from MarketResearch.com and the Beverage Marketing
Corp.
Based on these growth rates, Beverage Marketing Corp. has predicted that bottled
water may soon become the nation's second most popular beverage after soft drinks.
Another indicator of bottled water's popularity are questions about bottled water flowing into the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) regulatory and consumer information staff. Who regulates bottled water? How is
it regulated? Is bottled water tested and inspected?
Bottled Water Cost
The convenience of bottled water can be very expensive. Costs vary, depending on whether the water you drink is
a popular brand name, supermarket brand or discount store brand.
Brands we have checked range from $.02 per ounce for supermarket and discount store labels to $.08 per
ounce or more for the more popular brand names.
When you figure out, Bottled Water cost per gallon is from $2.50 to $10.24 or from $112.50 to $460.00 per
45 gallon drum. You think the price of gasoline is expensive. Not when you compare how
much it costs to process a gallon of water.
Now you understand why so many companies are marketing their own brand of Bottled Water. All this expense to the
consumer, but the consumer gets no guarantee as to the quality of water they are buying. At least with a
gallon of gas, you get an octane rating.
