Drinking Water Contaminants
Drinking Water Contaminants are the cause of Bad taste, Taste, Color and Odors. Drinking Water
Contaminants may be classified as biological, chemical (both inorganic and organic), physical, and radiological
impurities.
Water Contaminants, also called Water
Impurities, include decaying animal matter, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, radioactive
materials, salts. Water Imputities also include sediments, solvents and vegetable matter. Plus,
living microorganisms, like algae, bacteria, and viruses.
Drinking Water Contaminants can also cause corrosiveness, hardness, staining, frothing.
They can also impact many prescription drugs you are using.
If you are taking prescription drugs, testing or reviewing water reports. As you travel this is one way of
ensuring the water does not contain impurities that could adversely affect the prescription drugs you are
taking.
Water and Health Threats include bacteria, cysts, Protozoa, spores and viruses. Most viruses are
extremely small and difficult to remove.
Viruses can attach themselves to bacteria for a free ride. The most prevalent biological contaminants in water
are very small particles with a diameter of 2 to 4 microns.
One way to remove these health threats from the water is with a very fine carbon block
filter. However, some viruses are "free-swimming" and are not attached to anything.
If you are concerned about these viruses, an ultra-violet light systems is a good option.
Drinking Water Contaminants Can
1/ Affect our AESTHETIC SENSES of Appearance, Taste and Odor
Appearance: If It Looks Bad, It's Probably Got Sediment. Water with noticeable haze or
murkiness has impurities that are commonly referred to as sediment.
In addition to the noticeable affect on water clarity, sediment can also create problems by plugging up filters
and causing them to fail prematurely.
Taste And Odor: Contaminants that affect the taste and odor of water can easily pass right
through a sediment filter. The most common and effective way to clean up the taste and odor of water is to pass it
through a solid block activated carbon filter.
Carbon removes most of the impurities in water that cause the bad taste and odor. However, a
carbon filter only extracts a limited number of the impurities and has a predetermined life expectancy. The life of
a carbon filter can vary from a few hundred gallons to thousands of gallons.
Carbon filters cannot be cleaned, so they must be replaced. Carbon filters are generally more
expensive than a sediment filter, but should last twice as long.
2/ Cause either ACUTE or CHRONIC HEALTH EFFECTS
Acute Health Effects usually follow a large dose of a chemical and will occur almost
immediately. Examples of acute health effects are dizziness, lung irritation, nausea, skin rash, vomiting and in
extreme cases, death.
Chronic Health Effects include birth defects, cancer, disorders of the nervous system, damage
to the immune system and organ damage.
The levels of chemicals in drinking water are seldom high enough to cause acute health effects. They are more
likely to cause chronic health effects. These are effects that occur after exposure to small amounts of a
chemical over a long period.
