Reverse Osmosis
Water Treatment
Space Age Innovation
Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a product of space-age technology.
Reverse Osmosis is a remarkably simple way to purifying water and is ideal for use in RV's. The
RO process simply reverses the natural process of osmosis.
Reverse Osmosis (R/O) is a Water Treatment Process in which water is forced through a
semi-permeable membrane with very small holes or "pores". Clean water passes through and impurities that are too
big to pass through the membrane are left behind and flushed away.
Reverse Osmosis is a very common process used in modern water purification
systems. Industries as diverse as semiconductors, food processing, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, municipal
drinking water use Reverse Osmosis.
Reverse Osmosis Concept
The concept of Reverse Osmosis came from nature’s biological process of osmosis. Scientists
realized that if this natural process could be reversed, dissolved solids could be separated from water.
Scientists also found that nature’s process could be altered by applying enough pressure to
water to reverse the flow through a semi-permeable membrane.
Reverse Osmosis is a continuous, pressure driven process for separating water containing
dissolved materials into two streams. The water is purified by passage through the membrane barrier.
When Tap Water comes into contact with one side of a semi-permeable membrane and when sufficient pressure is
applied, water molecules are forced through the membrane.
Since the dissolved solids do not pass through the membrane, they are separated from the water and flushed
away.
Over the years, the search for suitable membrane materials has led to synthetic membranes. They are highly
permeable to water as well as being an effective barrier to dissolved solids, bacteria, and viruses.
Benefits Of Reverse Osmosis
* Delicious, pure, salt-free drinking water
* Crystal-clear, pure ice cubes
* Peace of mind, knowing your water is pure
* Compact, simple equipment - nothing to break down
* Cheap to operate - only requires water pressure
Use RO for all of your RV water, you'll get these additional benefits:
* Mineral Free Water - no more scale or mineral deposits
* Spot Free Water to wash vehicles with
Water that contains manganese, hydrogen sulphide or iron should be pre-treated to extend the life of the
membrane. Reverse Osmosis units produce no noise other than the sound of water discharging into
the drain.
Reverse Osmosis Purity
Under the best of conditions, including the right membrane and adequate water pressure, about 20 to 30% of the
water put into an RO unit will come out as pure water.
The remaining waste water is called "brine" because it has a higher concentration of contaminants than
when the water went into the unit.
The brine performs the vital function of carrying the contaminants away from the membrane, and
it must be disposed of in some manner.
RO does not remove all of the dissolved material from the feed water. Some of the dissolved stuff will pass
through an RO membrane.
The amount that gets through is very small, somewhere between 2 to 20% depending on the number, age and
condition of filters and the membrane.
Generally, very few harmful contaminants can pass through an RO membrane. All sediment
and most minerals will be removed by a Reverse Osmosis System.
